Our History

Community Living Renfrew County South has a rich history dating back to 1964. Founded by a dedicated group of parents and citizens, the organization has evolved over the years to provide essential supports and services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

From the establishment of group residences and rehabilitation centers to the implementation of innovative programs like Supported Independent Living and Life Skills, Community Living Renfrew County South continues to make a positive impact on the community.

With a steadfast commitment to inclusion and quality of life, the organization’s milestones reflect a legacy of compassion and dedication to those they serve.

Our Milestones

The Sixties

  • Renfrew and District Retarded Children’s Association established in 1964
  • Bonnechere Valley School opened at Bonnechere Manor, operated by the Association
  • Organization name changed to Renfrew and District Association for the Mentally Retarded
  • Bonnechere Valley School moved to new location at Burnstown. Rehabilitation Centre opened at Opeongo Road location
  • Renfrew County Board of Education assumed responsibility for Bonnechere Valley School

The Seventies

  • Bonnechere Valley School moved to the Queen Elizabeth School location
  • Adult Group Residence opened at 874 Raglan Street South
  • Adult Rehabilitation Centre moved to present location at 326 Raglan Street South

The Eighties

  • Adult Apartment Program implemented
  • Supported Independent Living Program implemented
  • Four places for children with developmental disabilities approved at Renfrew Child Development Centre
  • Life Skills Program implemented
  • Association incorporated under the name Community Living Renfrew and District
  • First Executive Director hired

The Nineties

  • First Annual Laurel Rafuse Memorial Golf Tournament
  • Summer supports put into place for children and teens
  • Assumed responsibility for Day Supports in Arnprior
  • Name changed to Community Living Renfrew County South

2000 +

  • Respite Apartment established
  • First Annual M. Sullivan and Son Golf Tournament in support of children’s summer programs
  • First Annual Community Living Renfrew County South & O.P.P. Renfrew Detachment Fund Raising Breakfast in support of Renfrew Ontario Special Olympics
  • Relocation of Day Supports in Arnprior to 68 Daniel Street North
  • Foundations Program for Youth implemented
  • First Annual Walk, Wheel or Run for Developmental Disabilities in Arnprior
  • Group Home gifted to Community Living Renfrew County South in Renfrew
  • First Group Home opened in Arnprior
  • Purchased Condominiums in Arnprior
  • Second Group Home opened in Arnprior
